UKUNA
An adult education, skills development and job creation program to empower communities, safeguard health, and create income generating opportunities.
The Ukuna project focuses upon literacy, employment opportunities and nutrition through food gardens.
Components of the project include:
- Literacy
- Numeracy
- Basic business skills
- HIV education through life skills
- Food security
This will be implemented through the adult education and food garden programme, which will not only create a measure of income generating opportunities for local people, but also serve to empower communities and safeguard their health through HIV prevention and nutrition.
Linking literacy to income development serves to improve livelihoods through developing an understanding of how to run a business, which is undertaken through implementing food gardens and food tunnels. Not only does this linkage serve a dual purpose of addressing both literacy and food security, but it also serves to secure class attendance and bond the group together through shared purposes and goals.
Did you know...
In South Africa:
- More than 1 in 4 adults cannot read or write: 2/3 are women.
- Comparisons of the link between literacy rates and economic development show that a 40% literacy rate is a necessary condition of economic development in any country. There are areas across South Africa that do not hold to that standard.
- World food prices are 36% above levels of a year ago - that has pushed 44 million people into poverty since last June. A further 10% rise would push 10m more below the extreme poverty line of $1.25 (76p) a day. A 30% cost hike in the price of staples could lead to 34 million more poor.
- HIV rates in South Africa are estimated at just under 20%, with worse rates in rural areas.
