Telecentros Brasil, as part of Regency Foundation Networx, continues to be involved with the community in the poverty stricken district of Guaianases in São Paulo, Brazil.
PC’s have been installed and an IT course provides the basis for teaching Word, Windows, Excel, the Internet, PowerPoint and FrontPage Express. Upon completion of the 32 hour course, the students receive a diploma from Telecentros Brasil in conjunction with the local University.
The certificate can prove vital in an individual's success when looking for work, especially in a region where as many as 2000 applications can be received for 200 jobs. Several local employment agencies have agreed to assist those students who have successfully completed the IT course.
Telecentros Brasil is developing a new program in its drive to motivate people to work for themselves. This will teach students how to use a PC and at the same time provide guidance on how to open a small business.
In this regard, Brazilian legal firm Piñheiro Neto has agreed to give its services free of charge to a number of people who wish to start on their own, together with those young people and groups who hope to forge a career in the music industry but cannot afford advice on contracts and legal pitfalls.
In addition, Telecentros Brasil sports and music groups have been successful in encouraging many youngsters between the ages of 7- 14 to take the introductory IT courses. It is also planned to provide counselling on sexuality, drugs and HIV/AIDS in conjunction with the World Health Organization.
Telecentros Brasil welcomes the opportunity of collaborating with businesses wishing to aid and develop low-income communities. Of particular interest is the involvement of companies in the design and implementation of specialised training programs, which provide trainees with industry-based skills and the prospect of subsequent employment opportunities.
