The Business of Development is a series of TV programmes, co-produced by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) TV Partnerships and World Television for CNBC. Its objective is to examine the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from a business as well as from a societal perspective.
For the global economy to develop in a way that is both positive and responsible towards global society, business does need to engage in partnerships with governments and civil society, but vitally, it does need to get the right business results. Consequently, the series discusses these issues in scenarios where partnerships are being tested, are interesting or innovative, or have actually succeeded.
UNDP TV Partnerships draws on UNDP's unique outreach and wide range of partners to produce documentaries that depict the world as seen through the eyes of those who are struggling to make life better for themselves and their children, as well as through the eyes of economic and political decision makers.
World Television is one of Europe’s longest established broadcast communications companies. The company is headquartered in London with EMEA and ASPAC offices. It is a partner of Reuters, which provides it with a global network of camera crews, producers and a worldwide satellite television infrastructure.
UNDP TV Partnerships & World Television have established exclusive editorial clearance and negotiated access to CNBC prime airtime for the series for both CNBC Europe & CNBC World (USA) – achieving a combined potential audience of over 100 million; CNBC being the most watched business channel in the world.
The initiative is also partnered by International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF), Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Regency Foundation Networx, with the objective of bringing CSR related issues to the attention of a much wider audience than previously possible. |
The series is presented by Jane Dutton (TV News Presenter for CNN, BBC World, CNBC Europe and CNBC US). Each programme begins with a general overview of the specific sector under discussion, followed by a profile of the two business partners, interviews with their respective CEO's and footage of the case studies relating to their CSR activities. These case studies are filmed in the field and discussed both in terms of sustainability and business viability.
As Mark Malloch Brown, UNDP Administrator has said: ‘we live in a globalised world, where everybody, from its poorest citizens to its most powerful corporations, shares an interest in the protection of national and global laws, transparent and accountable policies, and freedom to achieve our fullest potential – and that has created potential for a wide range of powerful new partnerships between UNDP and the private sector’.
